MANCHESTER, N.H.- Federal authorities in Boston are warning folks across New England of the latest scam in which thieves are pretending to be members of the FBI as part of a crime spree that’s already resulted in over 100 people in New Hampshire having money stolen.

Authorities say the scam begins with a phone call from someone claiming to be with a financial institution, saying your banking information was used to purchase illegal firearms, the caller then tries to transfer the caller to an FBI agent who verifies the banking information, and the call then disconnects.

A short time later the thieves call back on a number that appears to be from the FBI in Boston who then tries to reassure you that it’s a “real investigation.”

FBI officials say they will never call or email a citizen and demand money, or personal information, let alone ask someone to communicate with them through an encrypted application.
