CONCORD, N.H.- Gov. Kelly Ayotte has signed a bill that will allow for a question in the next two general elections that asks whether voters want to cap local property taxes spent on public schools.

In the event voters approve the question at the polls by at least a 60% supermajority vote, property taxes that go towards school spending would be limited to no more than the cost-of-living index and the annual increase in the community’s assessed property value.

The signing of House Bill 1300 comes as a win for Republicans and defeat to members of the state’s largest teacher’s union, along with education advocates who said that the campaign was part of a continued attack from conservative GOP legislators against public education.
