CONCORD, N.H.- Gov. Kelly Ayotte has vetoed a bill which would have given medical professionals an affirmative right of conscience when it comes to performing abortion care.
In her veto message Ayotte called House Bill 232 “unnecessary” and issued a statement on the matter;
“Federal law has long protected the religious beliefs or moral convictions of medical professionals and the right to decline to perform or assist an abortion. This federal right of conscience protects those in New Hampshire who work for abortion providers.”
Following news of the Governor’s veto the bill’s main sponsor Rep. Mark Pearson, R-Hampstead rejected the argument that the bill would further restrict abortion rights.
